Robert Edward Jones was afederal judge on theUnited States District Court for the District of Oregon. He joined the court in 1990 after being nominated by PresidentGeorge H.W. Bush (R). Jones tooksenior status on May 1, 2000, and leftsenior status on March 29, 2025 upon his death.[1]

Early life and education

A native ofPortland, Oregon, Jones graduated from the University of Hawaii with his bachelor's degree in 1949 and from the Northwestern School of Law of Lewis & Clark College with hisJ.D. in 1953.[2]

Military service

Jones served as a law specialist in U.S. Naval Reserve from 1945 to 1947 and from 1949 to 1967. He then served in the U.S. Naval Reserve's judge advocate general corps from 1967 to 1987. He served as a captain in the Reserve throughout his career.[2]

Jones was nominated by PresidentGeorge H.W. Bush onFebruary 20, 1990, to a seat on theUnited States District Court for the District of Oregon vacated by JudgeJames Burns. TheAmerican Bar Association rated JonesUnanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Jones' nomination were held before theSenate Judiciary Committee on April 4, 1990, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen.Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on April 26, 1990. Jones was confirmed by the unanimous consent of theU.S. Senate on April 27, 1990, and he received his commission on April 30, 1990. Jones elected to takesenior status beginning on May 1, 2000. Jones was succeeded in this position by JudgeMichael Mosman.[2][3][4]
