Structure
Mission
The mission statement of the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education reads:[1]

To lead and support districts, schools, and communities through a unified, strategic direction for education in the state. 2. To use policy, advocacy, and governance structures to create an environment that advances opportunities for all students. 3. Superintendent
The current Rhode Island Commissioner of Education isAngélica Infante-Green (nonpartisan). Infante-Green assumed office in 2019.
State Board of Education
The Board of Education consists of 17 members appointed by theGovernor and approved by theRhode Island State Senate. The board was created in 2014 by the merger of separate boards dealing with K-12 schools and higher education. Board members are responsible for developing policies related to early childhood education, K-12 curriculum, school safety and charter schools.[3]
