An electionrematch occurs when the same candidates run against each other in consecutive election cycles. In the 2025 general election,22 elections inBallotpedia's coverage scope were rematches for single-seat offices between the same candidates who ran in 2023. Additionally,four elections in 2025 were rematches for single-seat offices between the same candidates who ran in 2021, andtwo were rematches for single-seat offices between the same candidates who ran in 2019.

The 2025 rematches from 2023 and 2021, and 2019, a total of28 races included:

  • 15 state legislative races.
  • 13 local races in our coverage scope.

Nine total 2025 rematches (32%) were decided within a margin of 10 percentage points or fewer. This includes:

  • Seven 2023 to 2025 remtches.
  • Two 2019 to 2025 rematches.

In the 2023 to 2025 rematches, the candidate who won in 2023 won 18 out of 22 (82%) contests. In the 2021 to 2025 rematches, the candidate elected in 2021 won 3 out of 4 (75%) contests. In the 2019 to 2025 rematches, the candidate elected in 2019 won 1 out of 2 (50%) contests.

In the 2025 general election,12state legislative races were rematches in single-seat districts between the same candidates who ran in 2023. The following parties won those seats in 2023:

  • Democrats wonsix.
  • Republicans wonsix.

Three of those state legislative races were decided by a margin of 10 percentage points or fewer in 2023.

Local rematches

Ten2025 local races in Ballotpedia'scoverage scope were rematches in single-seat offices between the same candidates who ran in 2023. As of September 18, 2025,two races were decided by less than 10 percentage points. In races where a partisan affiliation was noted, a Democrat won five races.
