An electionrematch occurs when the same candidates run against each other in consecutive election cycles. In the 2022 general election,340 elections inBallotpedia's coverage scope were head-to-head rematches for single-seat offices between the same candidates who ran in 2020. Additionally,37 elections in 2022 were head-to-head rematches for single-seat offices between the same candidates who ran in 2018.[1]
The 2022 rematches from 2020 and 2018,377 races in total, represented about2.5% of all 2022 general elections in Ballotpedia's coverage scope.They included:
- 51 races for theU.S. House.[2]
- five state executive races.
- 287 state legislative races.
- 34 local races in our coverage scope.
Ninety-four of the 2020 to 2022 rematches (about 28%) were decided by a margin of 10 percentage points or fewer in 2020.Seventeen of the 2018 to 2022 rematches (about 45%) were decided by a margin of 10 percentage points or fewer in 2018.
In addition to head-to-head rematches between two candidates running for a single seat,197 elections in 2022 feature two or more candidates running in a multimember district who also ran against each other in 2020 or 2018. These races represent about1.2% of all 2022 general elections in Ballotpedia's coverage scope. They include:
- Two candidates running for a seat in one multimember state executive board
- 360 candidates running in139 multimember state legislative districts
- 136 candidates running in57 multimember municipal districts
This article only includes congressional rematches if they are between major party candidates. Congressional and state legislative districts wereredrawn in many states after the2020 census. This article includes rematch elections if two candidates ran against each other for the same congressional or state legislative office, even if the number of the district changed. For 2018 to 2022 rematches, this article only includes offices with four-year term lengths.[3] For multimember districts, totals only include losing candidates who finished as first-runner up in their 2020 or 2018 races.

In the 2022 general election,51 races for theU.S. House were rematches from 2020. Democrats won36 of those districts in 2020 and Republicans won15.Ten races were decided by a margin of 10 percentage points or fewer.
