TheRegulated Industries Committee is astanding committee of theFlorida State Senate.

Per the Senate Rules, committees of theFlorida State Senate are assigned by thePresident of the Senate.[1] The rules do not specify when or how often committees are assigned.The President shall appoint a chair and vice-chair for each standing committee and subcommittee.[2] A majority makes up a committee's quorum.[3]

Function

The Regulated Industries Committee examines legislation in the following subject areas:

  • Alcohol and tobacco issues, Boxing regulation, Building code, Child labor, Construction Lien Law, Condominiums and cooperatives, Elevators, Employee leasing companies, Farm labor, Funeral directors and cemeteries, Homeowners and community associations, Indoor smoking ban (implementation of constitutional language), Landlord-tenant, Mobile home parks, Pool regulations, Groups regulated through DBPR accounts, Restaurants and lodging establishments, State lottery, Surveyors and mappers, Timeshares and Travel clubs.[4][5]
Powers and responsibilities of committees:

(1) Permanent standing committees and standing subcommittees are authorized:

(a) To maintain a continuous review of the work of the state agencies concerned with their subject areas and the performance of the functions of government within each subject area;
(b) To invite public officials, employees, and private individuals to appear before the committees or subcommittees to submit information;
(c) To request reports from departments performing functions reasonably related to the committees’ jurisdictions; and
(d) To complete the interim work assigned by the President.

(2) In order to carry out its duties, each standing subcommittee has the reasonable right and authority to inspect and investigate the books, records, papers, documents, data, operation, and physical plant of any public agency in this state.
(3) In order to carry out the committee’s duties, the chair of each standing committee, standing subcommittee, and select committee may request the President to issue subpoenas, subpoenasduces tecum, and other necessary process to compel the attendance of witnesses and the production of any books, letters, or other documentary evidence required by such committee. The President may issue said process at the request of the committee chair. Any member of a standing committee, standing subcommittee, or select committee may administer all oaths and affirmations, in the manner prescribed by law, to witnesses who appear before such committees to testify in any matter requiring evidence.[6][5]
