Reena Raggi is afederal judge onsenior status on theUnited States Court of Appeals for the 2nd Circuit. She joined the court in 2002 after being nominated by PresidentGeorge W. Bush (R) and assumed senior status on August 31, 2018.

Prior to her appointment, Raggi served as a judge on theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. She joined the district court in 1987 after an appointment from PresidentRonald Reagan (R).[1]

Early life and education

Born inJersey City, New Jersey, in 1951, Raggi graduated from Wellesley College with her bachelor's degree in 1973, and from Harvard Law School with herJ.D. in 1976.[1]

Raggi was nominated by PresidentGeorge W. Bush (R) on May 1, 2002, to a seat vacated byAmalya Kearse. TheAmerican Bar Association rated RaggiUnanimously Well Qualified for the nomination.[2] Hearings on Raggi's nomination were held before theUnited States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on August 1, 2002, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen.Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) on September 5, 2002. Raggi was confirmed by a vote of 85-0 in theU.S. Senate on September 20, 2002, and she received her commission on October 4, 2002.[1][3] She assumedsenior status on August 31, 2018.

U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York

Raggi began her federal judicial career as a judge on theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of New York. Raggi was first nominated by PresidentRonald Reagan on October 3, 1986, to a seat vacated byFrank Altimari. Under provisions of Rule XXXI at sine die adjournment of theU.S. Senate, her nomination was returned to the president.

President Reagan resubmitted her nomination on January 20, 1987. Hearings on her nomination were held before theSenate Judiciary Committee were held on April 1, 1987, and her nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd (D-W.Va.), acting on behalf of then-U.S. Sen.Joseph Biden (D-Del.), on May 1, 1987. She was confirmed by a voice vote of the Senate on May 7, 1987, and she received her commission the same day. She resigned the court on October 7, 2002, upon her elevation to theSecond Circuit. She was succeeded in this position by JudgeDora Irizarry.[1][4][5]

Seinfeld case (2009)

District JudgeLaura Swain tossed out a copyright infringement lawsuit against Jessica Seinfeld on September 10, 2009, after the judge found that a recipe in a cook book did not infringe on a competing author.[6]

Missy Chase Lapine sued the wife of comedian Jerry Seinfeld claiming a chicken breast recipe infringed on her similar recipe and competed unfairly. The judge found that because the styles of the books differed there was no evidence that Seinfeld's wife committed plagiarism.[6] The judgment can be readhere.

The case was appealed to theSecond Circuit Court of Appeals. The two appeals court judges, Reena Raggi andPeter Hall, ruled against Missy Chase Lapine and affirmed the decision by Judge Swain.[7]

In 2010, Missy Chase Lapine sued Jerry Seinfeld for slander as a result of an interview Mr. Seinfeld participated in on the David Letterman television show. TheNew York Supreme Court dismissed the claim as being without merit in 2011. The judgment can be readhere.[8]
