Aspecial election for the position ofAlabama House of Representatives District 67 was called for April 18, 2017. A special primary election was held on January 31, 2017.

The filing deadline for major party candidates wishing to run in this election was November 29, 2016. The last day for third party candidates to submit petitions to get on the ballot for the general election was January 31, 2017.^[2]

The seat became vacant followingDarrio Melton's (D) election as mayor of Selma on October 4, 2016.^[3]

Raymond J. Butler (D),Prince Chestnut (D),Valenci'a Quest (D), andLatrell "Champ" Richardson (D) faced off in the Democratic primary. Chestnut received almost 70 percent of the vote in the primary, allowing him to win the primary without the need for a runoff election.^[4][5]

One independent candidate,Toby Gorden, qualified for the ballot and faced Chestnut in the April 18 election. Chestnut defeated Gorden in the April 18 election.^[6][7]
