This page tracked the key straw polls ofpotential presidential candidates for the two major parties—Republican and Democratic—in 2016.

Throughout each election cycle, straw polls are taken at various party conventions and caucuses, giving initial indications as to who a political party would like to run as their presidential candidate. These are nonbinding votes used to assess support for an idea or candidate. The methodology and structure of each straw poll varies.

If you notice a straw poll not listed here, please emailSarah Rosier.

Background

Straw polls were first used in the United States in 1824, conducted by news reporters. Reporters would wait outside polling centers and gauge public opinion based on voters leaving the polls. The term"straw poll" developed from the practice of assessing wind direction by tossing straw into the air and watching which direction it went. The same logic follows polling: it is an imprecise tool that is used to hypothesize who will win an election.[1]

While straw polls generally lack scientific characteristics, they can help formulate political campaign strategies. The Iowa Straw Poll, in particular, has been an indicator of whetherRepublican presidential hopefuls should keep running or withdraw from the race due to a perceived lack of support. A win only represents a small statistical showing of support in a typically less diverse crowd than scientific polling, but a wide margin loss can lead to the grounding of a campaign.[2]

The largest straw poll to date was conducted in the 1936 presidential election between Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Alfred Landon. TheLiterary Digest conducted and compiled results. The polling numbers showed a landslide victory for Landon but, due in part to the unscientific nature of the poll, the real election results provided Roosevelt with his second term in office.[3]

Iowa Straw Poll

The Iowa Republican Party voted to end the Iowa Straw Poll on June 12, 2015. The poll has been the recipient of scrutiny due to its inability to actually predict the Republican nominee.[4] Major contenders for theRepublican nomination had slowly been announcing that they would not participate in the poll in the weeks leading up to its cancellation.

Former Gov.Mike Huckabee announced on May 21, 2015, that he would skip the Iowa Straw Poll. In a guest opinion piece published inThe Des Moines Register, Huckabee wrote, "I have concluded this year's Iowa Straw Poll will serve only to weaken conservative candidates and further empower the Washington ruling class and their hand-picked candidates."[5] Huckabee wasn't the only candidate who planned to skip the Iowa Straw Poll:Marco Rubio,Scott Walker,Lindsey Graham andJeb Bush also declined to attend. OnlyBen Carson andTed Cruz publicly confirmed that they would have attended.[6]
