Planned Parenthood Federation of America is a501(c)(3)nonprofit organization whose website calls itself "the nation’s leading provider and advocate of high-quality, affordable sexual and reproductive health care for all people, as well as the nation’s largest provider of sex education."[1]
Background
Planned Parenthood Federation of America traces its founding to 1916, when Margaret Sanger and two other activists opened the first birth control clinic in the United States.[2] The organization's website says that Sanger started the clinic in Brooklyn to share birth control information and advice with local women and began expanding the organization that same year.[2]
As of August 2025, the organization had 49 local affiliates that operated nearly 600 facilities.[3]
Related groups
Planned Parenthood can refer to one of a number of organizations with separate missions and activities. All of the Planned Parenthood organizations focus on providing services like abortion, birth control and pregnancy testing, as well as sexual education, but the separate organizations vary by the degree to which they can and do participate in politics.

| Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA) cannot engage in activities that are part of the electoral process. The organization may educate voters on issues but must avoid political activities that favor or oppose a candidate or have the effect of favoring or opposing a candidate. PPFA provides services such as abortion, birth control and pregnancy testing, as well as community sex education programs. | Planned Parenthood Action Fund (PPAF) can legally participate in political activity in support of or opposition to candidates for office. These political activities cannot be the organization's primary activities and cannot be direct donations to a candidate for office or a candidate's committee. Services
Planned Parenthood Federation of America aims to provide services including abortion, birth control, emergency contraception, HIV treatment services, mental health support and pregnancy testing.[5]According to Planned Parenthood's 2022-23 annual report, abortions made up 4% of the total services provided by the organization.[6]
The organization has 49 affiliates, which are incorporated separately and operate independently. Other services provided by these affiliates include prenatal exams, prenatal screenings, breast exams, and testing and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases.[7]
Education
Planned Parenthood Federation of America offers sex education programs for teens and adults.[8]
