Ortrie Smith
Ortrie D. Smith is anArticle III federal judge for theUnited States District Court for the Western District of Missouri serving on senior status. He joined the court in 1995 after being nominated by PresidentBill Clinton.
Early life and education
A native ofMissouri, Smith graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia with his bachelor's degree in 1968 and later graduated from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law with his juris doctorate in 1971.[1]
Professional career
Smith spent his entire pre-judicial legal career as a Private practice attorney in the State ofMissouri from 1971 to 1995.[1]
Judicial career
Western District of Missouri
On the recommendation of House Democratic Leader, Missouri Congressman Dick Gephardt, Smith was nominated by PresidentBill Clinton onJune 30, 1995 to a seat vacated byHoward Sachs.Smith was confirmed by the U.S. Senate onAugust 11, 1995 on a Senate vote and received commission onAugust 14, 1995.[1] Smith was succeeded in this position byMary Elizabeth Phillips.
