The terms of threeOklahoma Court of Civil Appeals justices expired on January 10, 2021. The three seats were up forretention election on November 3, 2020. A full term on the court is six years.
Election procedure changes in 2020
Ballotpedia provided comprehensive coverage of how election dates and procedures changed in 2020. While the majority of changes occurred as a result of thecoronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, some changes occurred for other reasons.
Oklahoma modified its absentee/mail-in voting procedures for the November 3, 2020, general election as follows:
- Absentee/mail-in voting: Voters casting absentee ballots could submit copies of their identification in lieu of fulfilling the notarization requirement in the event of a state of emergency occurring within 45 days of an election. Individuals experiencing symptoms indicative of COVID-19, and individuals classified as vulnerable to infection, could cast an absentee ballot under the 'physical incapacitation' eligibility criterion.

Members of the Court of Civil Appeals are appointed by the governor of Oklahoma from a list of three names submitted by theOklahoma Judicial Nominating Commission. Judges serve initial terms of at least one year before undergoing aretention election. Regular terms last six years, after which judges must be retained to continue serving.[1][2] The chief judge is selected by peer vote and serves for one year.[3]
Qualifications
To serve on the Court of Civil Appeals, a judge must be:
- a qualified elector for at least one year;
- licensed to practice or a judge of a court of record for at least four years[1]
