Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction reads:[1]

The mission of the North Carolina State Board of Education is to use its constitutional authority to guard and maintain the right of a sound, basic education for every child in North Carolina Public Schools.[2]

Superintendent

The current North Carolina Superintendent of Public Instruction isMo Green (D). Green assumed office in 2025.

State Board of Education

The State Board of Education is composed of the Lieutenant Governor, the State Treasurer, and eleven other members that are appointed to eight year terms by the Governor and a joint session of the Legislature. Eight members represent each of the eight education districts and the three remaining members are appointed at-large. The Superintendent serves as secretary and chief administrative officer. The board is also advised by eight non-voting advisors. The Board is responsible for supervising and administering the free public school system and the educational funds provided for its support.[3]
