The24th Congressional District of New York held an election for theU.S. House of Representatives onNovember 8, 2016.
Heading into the election, Ballotpediarated this race as arace to watch. IncumbentJohn Katko (R) defeatedColleen Deacon (D) andMimi Satter (Working Families) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Deacon defeatedEric Kingson andSteven Williams in the Democratic primary, while Katko faced no primary challenger. The primary elections took place on June 28, 2016.[4][5]

Race background
IncumbentJohn Katko was a member of theNRCC's Patriot Program. The program was designed to help raise money and assist vulnerable incumbents seeking re-election.[13]
New York's 24th District race was one of the initial races listed on theDemocratic Congressional Campaign Committee's Red to Blue Program. The program "highlights top Democratic campaigns across the country, and offers them financial, communications, grassroots, and strategic support."[14] The DCCC endorsedColleen Deacon in the race.
Presidential preference
John Katko
Katko declined to endorse or vote forDonald Trump, explaining that Trump would need to earn his support. On May 5, 2016, Katko said, "Any candidate has to earn my vote, including Donald Trump. He has a lot of work to do in that regard. I'm concerned with some of the comments he's made, and with the general tone that he's taken." Katko added that he would not support Hillary Clinton (D) for president.[15]
