Structure
Mission
As of 2024, the mission statement of the Montana Office of Public Instruction read:[1]

Superintendent
The current Montana Superintendent of Public Instruction isSusie Hedalen (R). Hedalen assumed office in 2025.
State Board of Public Education
The Montana Board of Public Education consists of seven members, all of whom are appointed by thegovernor and confirmed by theMontana State Senate. Members serve seven-year terms. No more than four members may be from one of the two commission districts and no more than four may be affiliated with the same political party. The governor, Superintendent of Public Instruction and Commissioner of Higher Education serve as ex-officio, non-voting members of the board. In 1978, a student representative was officially added to the board. The board is responsible for setting the standards of accreditation for the state's schools, creating a system of teacher certifications, reviewing teacher certificates, adopting policies for special education of handicapped and gifted and talented students and acting as the governing agency for the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind.[3]
