Vacancies

Since treasurer is one of the three constitutional executive department heads that make upthe Executive Branch, its vacancy contingencies are addressed inArticle V, Section 6 of thestate constitution. The section states that the appointment can be rejected if a majority of state senators vote against it, with the window to reject open for "60 session days after the date of such appointment. Any appointment not disapproved within such period shall stand confirmed."[2]

Duties

The treasurer is responsible for managing all state funds.[3] This includes:[1]

  • Administers major tax laws and property tax laws
  • Safeguarding the credit of the state and its local units of government
  • Investing retirement funds of Michigan's state employees, public school employees, state police and judges
  • Distributing revenue sharing monies to local units of government
  • Auditing municipal finance records
  • Reuniting abandoned property with its rightful owner.
