State legislative elections in 2014

Elections for theMassachusetts House of Representatives took place in 2014. A primary election was held on September 9, 2014, and a general election was held onNovember 4, 2014. Thesignature filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was June 3, 2014.

Following the general election, there was no change to the majority control of theMassachusetts House of Representatives. Both theRepublican andDemocratic parties posted gains in the general election due to six vacant seats being filled during the election. The Democrats maintained a large majority but fell to 125 seats in the chamber. Republicans had six net gains, increasing their total from 29 to 35 seats.

Candidates unopposed by a major party

In 100 of the 160 districts up for election in 2014, one major party candidate ran unopposed in the general election. A total of 84 Democrats and 16 Republicans were guaranteed election barring unforeseen circumstances.

Two major party candidates faced off in the general election in 60 of the 160 districts up for election. Five of those seats held competitive elections in 2012 with a margin of victory ranging from 0 to 5 percent, and another two held competitive elections but were uncontested in 2014. Three other elections were mildly competitive, with a margin of victory of 5 to 10 percent, although two of those seats were uncontested in 2014. Those districts were:

  • Second Franklin District: IncumbentDenise Andrews (D) was defeated bySusannah Whipps Lee in the general election. Andrews won by a margin of 1 percent in 2012.
  • Fourth Middlesex District: IncumbentDanielle Gregoire (D) defeatedMatthew Elder (R) in the general election. Gregoire won by a margin of 1 percent in 2012.
  • Eighth Plymouth District: IncumbentAngelo D'Emilia (R) defeatedJoseph Pacheco (D) in the general election. D'Emilia won by a margin of 5 percent in 2012.
