Structure

Mission

The mission statement of the Maryland State Department of Education reads:[2]

“We will ensure a rigorous and world-class educational experience for every Maryland student, in every neighborhood, that prepares each to be college and career ready, through:
  • strategic direction and leadership;
  • policy making and resource allocation; and
  • engagement and advocacy.[3]
”

Superintendent

The current Maryland Superintendent of Schools isCarey M. Wright (nonpartisan). Wright assumed office in 2024.

State Board of Education

The Maryland State Board of Education is the main policy-setting body that oversees elementary and secondary education in the state. Each school district has its own school board. The board not only establishes education policies and standards but also approves the annual budget. The state board consists of 13 board members who are appointed by theGovernor of Maryland with the advice and consent of the Senate and one student member with partial voting rights. Regular members may serve two four-year terms, and student members serve a one-year term. The superintendent is selected by the board for a renewable four-year term. The superintendent also serves as secretary-treasurer to the board but does not have a vote.[4]
