TheMaine Commissioner of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry is a nonpartisan position in the Maine state government. The commissioner acts as head of the Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry, which deals with all aspects of the state's food system and is responsible for preserving, protecting, and enhancing Maine's land resources. In Maine, the commissioner is appointed by the governor with the approval of thestate legislature.[1]
In 2012, the department of agriculture, conservation and forestry was formed from the merger of thedepartment of agriculture and thedepartment of conservation.[2]Maine GovernorPaul LePage (R) announced his intentions to combine the two departments in the fall of 2011, saying a joint department could better serve industries related to farming and forestry and help them drive economic development.[2] The merger became law the following spring as part of a supplemental budget package.[2]

The current Maine Commissioner of Agriculture, Conservation, and Forestry isAmanda Beal (nonpartisan). Beal assumed office in 2019.

Appointments
As outlined inTitle 7, Part 1, Chapter 1, §1 of the Maine State Statutes, the commissioner is nominated by theGovernor of Maine, subject to review by thelegislative committee on agriculture, conservation and forestry, as well as confirmation by a vote of thestate legislature. The commissioner holds office at the pleasure of the governor.[3]
