Lyonel Senter
Lyonel Thomas Senter, Jr. was anArticle III federal judge for theUnited States District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by PresidentJimmy Carter. Senter retired fromsenior status on Friday,April 8, 2011.[1] Judge Senter passed away onMay 18, 2011, just five weeks after retiring.[2]
Early life and education
A native ofMississippi, Senter graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi with his bachelor's degree in 1956 and later graduated from the University of Mississippi Law School with his Law degree in 1959 along with continuing education at the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada-Reno.[3]
Professional career
Senter started out as a private practice attorney licensed in the State ofMississippi from 1959 to 1968. In addition to his private practice work, Senter was a prosecuting attorney for Monroe County from 1960 to 1963 and also was a U.S. Court Commissioner for theUnited States District Court for the Northern District of Mississippi from 1966 to 1968. Senter also was a Circuit court judge for the First Judicial District of Mississippi from 1968 to 1979.[3]
Judicial career

Senter was nominated by President Jimmy Carter on October 11, 1979 to a seat vacated byOrma Rinehart Smith. Senter was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 20, 1979 on a Senate vote and received commission onDecember 21, 1979. Senter served as the chief judge of the court from 1982 to 1998 before assumingsenior status onJuly 30, 1998. He retired from the court altogether onApril 8, 2011.[3]
