- The implementation of historically factual curriculum and instructional materials is more important than ever. We need a representative who will stand up for historically factual curriculum and instructional materials.
- The pandemic has created losses when it comes to educational attainment. These losses have disproportionately impacted our students of color. I will work and partner with schools in District 11 to close the learning loss caused by the pandemic. We need to re-engage these students and provide schools and districts with the resources they need to turn those losses around.
- The workforce in Texas is changing, and the SBOE and our schools should be playing an active role in ensuring that the skills and abilities our students are gaining in schools align with the skills and abilities required by business and organizations in Texas.. We need to make sure that we are preparing the students who want to go into higher education, but we should also be preparing the students who desire to go into other trades such as the skills trades.
I had just arrived at a new middle school where I didn’t know anyone. Within a few weeks of me starting, Elizabeth Lopez decided that I was going to be what ended up as her lifelong project. She was my music teacher, and she instilled in me a lifelong love of music. But, she also pushed and fought for me to enroll in advanced classes knowing that I could handle them even if I didn’t know it at the time. Even after middle school she checked in with me, she supported me and helped fill in the gaps that my immigrant, single mother of four wasn’t able to fill. She even took me on college visits. Teachers like her are the reason why I worked as a middle school teacher, and where my passion for education comes from. Without her support, I would not be the man or father that I am today. It is to help create a system that embraces and emboldens teachers like Elizabeth that I am running for the State Board of Education.
