Gist graduated from Arizona State University and Arizona Western College. He is a former staff member of theArizona State Legislature and has worked in the financial services industry, as a mortgage broker/banker, private business owner, and realtor.[1]

Gist won the Green Party primary on August 24 with 77.41% of the vote. He faced incumbentJan Brewer (R),Terry Goddard (D), andBarry J. Hess (L) in the November 2 general election.[2]
