The city ofLaredo, Texas, heldnonpartisan elections formayor and city council on November 4, 2014. The filing deadline for candidates wishing to run in this election was August 18, 2014.[1] Five city council seats were up for election. These included Districts1,2,3,6, and8.
Incumbents ran for re-election in Districts 2, 3 and 6. District 2 incumbentEsteban Rangel and District 6 incumbentCharlie San Miguel ran unopposed, while District 3 incumbentAlejandro "Alex" Perez, Jr. faced two challengers. MayorRaul G. Salinas, District 1 representative Mike Garza and District 8 representativeCindy Liendo did not run for re-election. Liendo, it should be noted, ran for mayor.
In the general election for mayor,Pete Saenz won a clear victory. In the city council elections, however, no candidate received over 50% of the vote in Districts 1, 3 and 8. The top two vote-getters in these districts therefore faced each other in a runoff election on December 20, 2014.[2]
Several different issues shaped Laredo's 2014 election cycle. Some of the most important were public safety, economic development and access to potable water.[3][4] The latter issue was especially important as drought slowly caused local reservoirs and other water sources in southernTexas to reach record lows in 2014.[3]
