Candidate Connection

Keith Faber participated inBallotpedia's candidate survey on April 10, 2018. The survey questions appear in bold, and Keith Faber's responses follow below.[14]

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

1) I would use the Auditor's power of performance audits to shine a light on inefficient, ineffective government including performing audits of Ohio higher education.

2) I would be a steward of the public trust, working to catch public officials who are lying, cheating, or stealing and bring them to justice.
3) I would increase the collaboration and partnership between the Auditor's office and local governments around the state.[15][16]

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about? Why?

My entire legislative career has been dedicated to making government more efficient, effective, and transparent. Most of the things that state government does are nonpartisan. While the Auditor is elected in a partisan election, it is not a partisan position. The Auditor of State is the one position in state government whose job is to be a watchdog of state government and shine a light on the inefficient, ineffective practices that cost tax payers money. As the drafter of Ohio's regulatory reform efforts and the challenge that led to an average 11.7% reduction in the cost of public college degrees, we have shown that government can do more with less.Cite error: Invalid<ref> tag; invalid names, e.g. too many[16]

Ballotpedia also asked the candidate a series of optional questions. Keith Faber answered the following:

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

Good listener, hard worker, independent critical thinking, and an innovative problem solver.[16]
What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?
My knowledge private sector experience coupled with my knowledge of state government and history of working to make state government work better gives me a good basis to understand where opportunities exist to make government more efficient and effective.[16]
What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?
The Auditor of State is Ohio's Chief Compliance Officer.[16]
What legacy would you like to leave?
A more efficient, effective and transparent Ohio government at all levels.[16]
What was your very first job? How long did you have it?
Shoveling snow and mowing lawns before I was 12 ans as a janitor for a local business at 12.[16]
What responsibilities of this office do you personally consider the most important?
Keeping public officials accountable and honest coupled with providing confidence to Ohioans that their public funds are not mismanaged.[16]
Are there any little-known powers or responsibilities held by this office that you believe more people should be aware of?
The Auditor sits on the Redistricting commission which will be responsible for drawing legislative lines and may also have a hand in the drawing of Congressional districts for the State.[16]
Do you believe that it’s beneficial for holders of this office to have previous experience in government or politics?
It will be very helpful for anyone in this position to know how state government works. My experience with the state budget and working with state agencies will provide a great opportunity to identify potential efficiency and misspending.[16]
What kind of skills or expertise do you believe would be the most helpful for the holders of this office to possess?
My more that twenty years as a mediator and person handling financial matters gives me a technical background to identify and resolve complex issues that are regularly present in the Auditor's office.[16]

Campaign website

Faber’s campaign website stated the following:

Government Accountability and Transparency

OPEN THE GOVERNMENT. GIVE UP THE RECORDS.

Even the news media recognized Conservative Keith Faber as a leader in creating access to public records. In fact, the Ohio Coalition for Open Government gave him their Public Service Award for it. As Auditor of State, Keith Faber will work with local government agencies to make the most commonly requested public records online so that Ohioans have easy access 24 hours a day.

After all, it’s your money and your records.

Cut Regulation and Red Tape

CUTTING JOB-KILLING REGULATIONS

Ohio’s economy depends on growing and maintaining a strong environment for entrepreneurs and private industry. That’s why Keith Faber led on reforms that have reduced new regulatory filings by nearly 50 percent and why he will continue his fight to reform Ohio’s burdensome regulatory environment so that we protect families and grow our economy at the same time.

Rein in Wasteful Spending

TAKING A HARDER LOOK AT STATE AGENCIES

Ohio spends billions of dollars on government bureaucracy. Keith Faber crafted and helped pass legislation that requires performance audits of state agencies and may sunset ineffective, inefficient, or outdated state agencies.

Improving Government Efficiency

EFFICIENT, LESS COSTLY GOVERNMENT

Keith Faber forced Ohio to cut taxes by $5 billion and insisted on the elimination of the job-killing small business tax. He knows a more efficient state government needs less of your money.

Improve Higher Education Affordability and Efficiency

MORE AFFORDABLE AND EFFICIENT HIGHER EDUCATION

Ohioans want to send their children to quality colleges and universities that are affordable. That’s why Keith Faber issued the Ohio Higher Education Challenge that reduced the cost of a degree at Ohio colleges and universities by an average of 11 percent. Keith Faber will initiate performance audits of higher education to help eliminate waste and inefficiency.[16]

Scorecards

Ascorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
