Biography

Junie Joseph was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Joseph earned an associate degree from Valencia College in 2009, a bachelor's degree in political science from the University of Florida, a master's degree in applied human rights from the University of York, and a law degree from the University of Colorado. Her career experience includes working as a lawyer and human rights officer.[1][2]

As your current State Representative, I enthusiastically wake up every day to do this job because I understand and live the challenges that members of our community face. For example, I am a renter in Boulder and was a law student when I ran for Boulder city council. I balanced a challenging work load of both a law student and that of a council member in my first years representing the Boulder community. I have since obtained my degree, passed the Colorado Bar, and opened my own law practice providing family law services. Each of these responsibilities and commitments alone constitute a full time effort, yet I prioritized public service and balanced the work load successfully, just as I will do as the representative for House District 10.
  • As a proven advocate for economic security and affordability, I will continue to champion legislation that addresses these crucial issues. House District 10 residents can trust my track record and expect me to remain steadfast in my commitment to environmental sustainability, affordable/attainable housing, and social justice. My personal passion for promoting decarbonization and sustainable practices is a driving force behind my initiatives. I will prioritize actions to combat climate change and protect the environment, pushing for legislation that promotes sustainable and renewable energy, reduces greenhouse gas emissions, and enhances our cities and state’s resilience to the impacts of climate change.
  • As a proven advocate for economic security and affordability, I will continue to champion legislation that addresses these crucial issues. House District 10 residents can trust my track record and expect me to remain steadfast in my commitment to affordable/attainable housing. With housing costs continuing to be out of reach for many residents of HD10, affordability in Boulder and across the state is a top priority. I will continue to tackle both the symptoms and the underlying issues. I will advocate for policies focusing on rent stabilization and addressing the interconnected challenges of high cost housing. I will continue supporting initiatives that boost housing affordability both in Boulder and around Colorado.
  • My goals for addressing homelessness in Boulder and the Denver Metro area involve more than emergency responses to people experiencing unsheltered homelessness. We need comprehensive programs that keep people housed via emergency rental and financial assistance, transitional housing options for people recovering from addiction or mental illness, and permanent supportive housing initiatives for those who need long-term support. Recognizing the unique challenges faced by vulnerable populations, such as foster youth aging out of the system, I will advocate for tailored behavioral health services and transition programs to facilitate stable housing and holistic well-being. I will continue to advocate for affordable healthcare and Childcare.
I am personally passionate about renter's protection because I am a renter and I have seen first hand the impact of eviction on the individual and also on the rest of society- the taxpayers. I believe it is important to get to the root causes of eviction so that the rest of society doesn't have to pay so much in reaction to someone being homeless and living on the street.
I am inspired by people who overcome great challenges to achieve whatever that is meaningful in their lives.
I can't think of a specific book at this moment. If someone want to understand my political philosophy, they can look at my personal life, where I was born and the life I have lived thus far. I was very intentional about what I study at University from my BA in Political Science to my Master in Human rights to my law degree. I believe being elected is about service and service requires intention to improve the systems.

I don't know how to respond to this question. Covid? 2022: that was pretty shocking: Stay in doors, social distance all things that are not natural.

I have really thought this through, and wrote some thing, then erased it and wrote another and erased it. And here is where I have landed: as a human I have many struggles, but none that I believe I should be sharing on a political platform without context and more than 2000 character.

Tabor, housing, climate- we are an oil producing state. We liberalized our housing laws a lot but I still believe that we will still have issues with housing affordability for working people. While some believe Tabor is about government accountability and transparency, it makes it hard for us to fund services.
Yes, a legislator with prior experience understand the political environment and legislative process. Further an experience legislator is more efficient and effective at the job.
Yes, it is extremely important to build relationship but within and across the legislature.
Off course there are some excellent past, present legislator that I find inspiring.
At this time I am focused on being the best state representative for House District 10.
Community members have reached out to me and tell me about the impact of my legislations on their lives. I have had community members who reached out to me about House Bill 23-11, renters protection- these communities members have told me how their landlord try to bypass the legislative protection of the bill.
I can't think of one at this time...
No that is the power of the Governor. There is a check and balance process. Each branch should stay in their corner and do its own work and seek support from the other branches of government. But no more power should be granted to one branch of government.

If re-elected I would work on a bill that I wanted to introduce this year and did not. I wanted to introduce a bill that give youths in the foster care system more access to parks

I believe in government accountability and transparency. As a former member of the City Council’s financial strategy committee I pushed for transparency, accountability and good governance through the implementation of OpenGov; I was also a member of the audit committee, supporting the Audit team, in looking at the city’s budget and departmental processes.
I don't fully understand this question. Most ballot initiative requires way too many signatures. But I understand that getting community buy-in is an important part of the process.

Junie is a family law attorney, current Boulder City Council Member, and Candidate for house district 10. Junie earned a B.A. in Political Science with a minor in Anthropology from the University of Florida. Additionally, she received a Master’s in Applied Human Rights from the University of York in England.

Junie is an avid learner, who devotes much of her time in learning about various cultures. She also enjoys traveling and has visited approximately 25 countries. On Council, Junie continues to advocate for socio-economic diversity and political inclusion for all Boulder community members. Junie is currently serving on various City, County, and State Boards and Commissions.
