John Tunheim
John Tunheim is afederal judge onsenior status with theUnited States District Court for the District of Minnesota. He joined the court on July 10, 1995, after being nominated by PresidentBill Clinton (D). He served aschief judge of the court from July 1, 2015, to June 30, 2022. He assumed senior status on December 1, 2023.[1][2]
Early life and education
Born in Thief River Falls,Minnesota, Tunheim graduated from Concordia College with a bachelor's degree in 1975 and received a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1980.[3]

Judicial career
District of Minnesota
On the recommendation of Senators Paul Wellstone and Mark Dayton, Tunheim was nominated to theUnited States District Court for the District of Minnesota by President Bill Clinton on July 10, 1995, to a seat vacated byDonald Alsop as Alsop went onsenior status. Tunheim was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 22, 1995, on a Senate Vote and received commission onDecember 26, 1995.[4]
