John Patrick Hartigan (1887-1968) was afederal judge on theUnited States Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit and theUnited States District Court for the District of Rhode Island. He joined theFirst Circuit in 1951 after an appointment byHarry Truman. He joined theDistrict of Rhode Island in 1940 after an appointment fromFranklin Delano Roosevelt. At the time of appointment he was theRhode Island Attorney General. He assumedsenior status onMarch 31, 1965, and served in that position until his death onAugust 10, 1968.[1]

Judicial career

First Circuit

On December 21, 1950, Hartigan was nominated byHarry Truman to a seat on the First Circuit Court of Appeals vacated byJohn Christopher Mahoney; he was confirmed by the Senate on January 2, 1951, and received commission onJanuary 3rd. He assumedsenior status onMarch 31, 1965, and served in that position until his death onAugust 10, 1968. His position was filled byFrank Coffin.[1]

District of Rhode Island

Hartigan was nominated by PresidentFranklin Delano Roosevelt on January 11, 1940, to a seat on the Rhode Island District Court vacated byJohn Christopher Mahoney; he was confirmed by the Senate on February 1, 1940, and received commission onFebruary 12. He served the District of Rhode Island untilJanuary 13, 1951. His position was filled byEdward Leahy.[1]
