John Phil Gilbert is afederal judge onsenior status with theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of Illinois. He joined the court in 1992 after being nominated by PresidentGeorge H.W. Bush. From 1993 to 2000, Gilbert served as thechief judge of the district court.

Early life and education

A native ofCarbondale, Illinois, Gilbert graduated from the University of Illinois with his bachelor's degree in 1971 and from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1974 with hisJ.D.[1]

Gilbert was nominated by PresidentGeorge H.W. Bush on July 2, 1992, to a seat vacated byJames Foreman. TheAmerican Bar Association rated GilbertUnanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Gilbert's nomination were held before theSenate Judiciary Committee on August 11, 1992, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen.Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on September 17, 1992. Gilbert was confirmed by the unanimous consent of theU.S. Senate on September 23, 1992, and he received his commission the next day. Gilbert served as thechief judge of thedistrict court from 1993 to 2000. Gilbert elected to takesenior status beginning onMarch 15, 2014. He was succeeded in this position by JudgeStaci Michelle Yandle.[1][2][3]
