John Conway was afederal judge for theU.S. District Court for the District of New Mexico. He joined the court in 1986 after being nominated by PresidentRonald Reagan. Conway was a judge serving on senior status until his death on June 1, 2014, at the age of 79.[1][2]

Early life and education

Conway graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy inAnnapolis, Maryland with his bachelor's degree in 1956 and graduated from the Washburn University School of Law with his law degree in 1963.[1]

Military service

From 1956 to 1960, Conway served in the US Navy as part of a post graduation active duty service commitment upon graduation from the Naval Academy, and also served in the Navy Reserve from 1960 to 1970.[1]

Professional career

From 1963 to 1986, Conway was an attorney in the State ofNew Mexico. Conway a member of theNew Mexico State Senate from 1970 to 1980. Conway was majority leader of the State Senate from 1972 to 1980. He also served as city attorney forAlmogordo, New Mexico from 1966 to 1972 on a part-time basis.[1]

Judicial nominations and appointments

District of New Mexico

Conway was nominated by President Ronald Reagan on May 14, 1986, to a seat vacated by Bobby Ray Baldock as Baldock went onsenior status. Conway was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on June 13, 1986, and received commission onJune 16, 1986. He was chief judge of the court from 1994 to 2000 before assuming senior status onSeptember 1, 2000.[1] Conway was succeeded in this position by JudgeWilliam P. Johnson.
