John Andrew Peters (1864-1953) was the seventhfederal judge in theUnited States District Court for the District of Maine. He joined the court in 1921 after an nomination fromPresident Warren G. Harding. He assumed senior status on January 2, 1947, and served on the court until retirement onAugust 1, 1953. He passed away on August 22, 1953.[1]

Early life and education

Peters was a graduate of Bowdoin College, earning an A.B. in 1885 and an A.M. in 1888. He earnedRead law recognition in 1887.[1]

Professional career

Peters studied law at the office of his cousin, Andrew Wiswell, who would later becomeChief Justice of theMaine Supreme Judicial Court. He began his law career in 1887 as a private practice attorney in Ellsworth, Maine, where he worked until 1913. In 1896 he began civil service as a judge for the Municipal Court of Ellsworth, a position that he held for 12 years. He was elected to the Maine House of Representatives in 1909, 1911 and 1913 when he served as speaker. He then went on to serve in the U.S. House from 1913 until 1922 (5 terms).[1]

Peters was nominated to the court byPresident Warren G. Harding on October 25, 1921, to fill the seat vacated byClarence Hale. The U.S. Senate confirmed him onNovember 14, 1921, and he was commissioned that same day. He served on the court for 25 years and assumed senior status on January 2, 1947. He retired onAugust 1, 1953 and passed away on August 22, 1953. He was succeeded in this position byJohn Clifford.[1]
