An effort torecall Jane Lano from her position as Clerk of Bertrand Township,Michigan, was granted to circulate petitions in October 2014.[1] The recall election was scheduled for May 5, 2015.[2] Lano wasrecalled.[3]
In July 2015, citizens began an effort to recallTownship Supervisor Steve Hicks and Treasurer David Kuhn. The petition needed to pass a clarity hearing before it moved forward. The recall petition and another, later attempt failed their clarity hearings and were rejected.[4][5]
Recall supporters
Lano was accused of failing to notify the Bertrand Township board, attorney or insurance carrier about a civil rights complaint filed against the township by an employee. Lano notarized the complaint.[1]
Martin Couture, a representative on the Southeast Berrien County Landfill Board, filed for the recall language against Lano. Couture stated, "If you get a claim or even a potential claim you have a responsibility to notify your insurance company, especially if you expect them to cover a potential loss. Right off the bat there should’ve been some quick response; 24 hours, 48 hours, something along those lines."[1]
Recall opponents
Clerk Jane Lano responded to Couture's accusations, saying, "Apparently Mr. Couture feels I need to be recalled from office for doing something right." She said she was not aware of any rule or law requiring her to notify the board of a signature notarization.[1]
