James von der Heydt was afederal judge with theUnited States District Court for the District of Alaska. He joined the court on November 3, 1966, after a nomination by PresidentLyndon B. Johnson (D). von der Heydt served aschief judge from 1973 to 1984. He assumedsenior status on July 15, 1984. His service ended on December 1, 2013, when he died.[1]

Early life and education

A native of Montana, von der Hedyt earned a bachelor's degree from Albion College-Michigan in 1942. He earned aJ.D. from the Northwestern University School of Law in 1951.[1]

Professional career

When Alaska was still a territory, von der Hedyt was a Deputy U.S. Marshal for Alaska from 1945 to 1948 before becoming a Federal Court Commissioner in theUnited States District Court for the District of Alaska in 1951. In 1951, von der Heydt was nominated by PresidentDwight D. Eisenhower to be U.S. Attorney for the District of Alaska. He served in this position from 1951 to 1953. von der Heydt worked as a private practice attorney licensed in the State ofAlaska from 1953 to 1959 and served as a member of the Alaska House of Representatives from 1957 to 1959. von der Heydt served as a presiding judge with the Alaska Superior Court from 1959 to 1966.[1]

von der Heydt was nominated byPresident Lyndon B. Johnson on September 9, 1966, to a seat vacated byWalter Hodge when Hodge assumedsenior status. von der Heydt was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on October 20, 1966, and received commission on November 3, 1966. von der Heydt served as thechief judge of the court from 1973 to 1984. He assumedsenior status onJuly 15, 1984.[1] Von der Heydt was succeeded in this position byRussel Holland.
