James Gritzner is anArticle III federal judge onsenior status for theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of Iowa. He joined the court in 2002 after being nominated by PresidentGeorge W. Bush. Gritzner became chief judge of the court in 2011. He served as chief judge until assumingsenior status on March 1, 2015.[1]

Early life and education

Gritzner graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University with his bachelor's degree in 1969. He graduated from the University of Northern Iowa with his Master's degree in 1974 before attaining hisJ.D. degree from Drake University Law School in 1979.[1]

Professional career

Gritzner began his legal career as an assistant toMagistrate JudgeRonald Longstaff in theUnited States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa from 1977 to 1979. From 1979 to 2002, Gritzner was an attorney in private practice. Gritzner also served as a member of the Iowa Board of Parole from 1980 to 1982.[1]

Judicial career

On the recommendation of U.S. SenatorChuck Grassley, Gritzner was nominated by PresidentGeorge W. Bush onJuly 2001 to a seat vacated by JudgeCharles Wolle as Wolle went onsenior status. Gritzner was confirmed by the U.S.Senate onFebruary 14, 2002, on a majority voice vote and received commission onFebruary 19, 2002. Gritzner became chief judge of the court in 2011 until assumingsenior status.[2]
