James Fox
James Carroll Fox was afederal judge on theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina. He joined the court in 1982 after being nominated by PresidentRonald Reagan. Fox retired from full-time service, assumingsenior status, on January 31, 2001. His service ended on March 23, 2019, when he died.[1]
Early life and education
A native ofAtchison, Kansas, Fox graduated from the University of North Carolina with his bachelor's degree in 1950 and from the University of North Carolina School of Law with hisJ.D. in 1957.[1]

Fox served in the U.S. Army from 1951 to 1959.[1]

Fox was nominated by PresidentRonald Reagan onSeptember 14, 1982, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629. Hearings on Fox's nomination were held before theSenate Judiciary Committee on September 22, 1982, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on September 28, 1982. Fox was confirmed by the unanimous consent of theU.S. Senate on September 29, 1982, and he received his commission onSeptember 30, 1982. Fox served as thechief judge of the district court from 1990 to 1997. He elected to takesenior status beginning onJanuary 31, 2001. Fox's service ended on March 23, 2019, when he died. He was succeeded in this position by JudgeLouise Flanagan.[1][2]
