James A. Beaty, Jr. was afederal judge with theUnited States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina. He joined the court in 1994 after being nominated by PresidentBill Clinton (D). Beaty was thechief judge of the court from 2006 to October 31, 2012.[1] Beaty assumedsenior status on June 30, 2014. Beaty retired from the court on January 31, 2018.[2]

Early life and education

Born inWhitmire, South Carolina, Beaty graduated from Western Carolina University with his bachelor's degree in 1971 and later from the University of North Carolina School of Law inChapel Hill, North Carolina with aJ.D. degree in 1974.[2]

Professional career

From 1974 to 1981, Beaty entered private practice in the State ofNorth Carolina before becoming a superior court judge in theForsyth County Superior Court from 1981 to 1994.[2]

Judicial nominations and appointments

Middle District of North Carolina

Beaty was nominated to theUnited States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina by President Bill Clinton on August 25, 1994 to a seat vacated byRichard Erwin. Beaty was confirmed by the U.S.Senate on October 7, 1994, on a voice vote and received commission onOctober 11, 1994. Beaty has served as the Chief Judge of the Court since 2006.[3] Beaty assumedsenior status on June 30, 2014.
