James B. Moran
James Byron Moran was anArticle III federal judge for theUnited States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by PresidentJimmy Carter. Moran is served onsenior status from June 30, 1995 until his death onApril 21, 2009.
Early life and education
A native Chicago citizen, Moran graduated from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor with his bachelor's degree in 1952 and graduated from Harvard Law School with a juris doctoral degree.[1]
Professional career
After graduation from Michigan Moran served as a U.S. Army Sergeant from 1952to 1954 before entering law school at Harvard. Moran was a Law clerk for former federal appeals judge J. Edward Lumbard in theSecond Circuit Court of Appeals from 1957-1958 after graduation from Harvard Law School. After law school and before the Federal bench, Moran was a private practice attorney inChicago from 1958 to 1979. During that time as an attorney Moran held elective office, first as a member of the Illinois General Assembly from 1965 to 1966 and a member of theEvanston, IL City Council from 1971 to 1975.[1]
Judicial nominations and appointments
Northern District of Illinois
Moran was nominated by PresidentJimmy Carter on May 22, 1979, to a new seat created by 92 Stat. 1629 which was approved by Congress. Moran was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on July 23, 1979, and received commission onJuly 24, 1979. Moran served as the court's chief judge from 1990 to 1995 before assuming senior status onJune 30, 1995.[1]
