Ivan L.R. Lemelle is anArticle III federal judge onsenior status for theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana. He joined the court in 1998 after being nominated by PresidentBill Clinton. Lemelle assumedsenior status on June 29, 2015.^[1][2]

Education

Born in Opelousas, Louisiana, Lemelle graduated from Xavier University-Louisiana with his bachelor's degree in 1971 and from Loyola University New Orleans School of Law with hisJuris Doctor degree in 1974.^[2]

Professional career

Lemelle was a law clerk for Judge Robert Collins in the New Orleans Parish Criminal District Court from 1972 to 1974 before serving as an assistant district attorney in New Orleans Parish, Louisiana until 1977. Lemelle was a private practice attorney inLouisiana from 1977 to 1981. Lemelle briefly served part-time as assistant city attorney for the City ofNew Orleans, Louisiana from 1977 to 1978. Lemelle was an assistant attorney general for the Louisiana Department of Justice from 1980 to 1984.^[2]

Judicial career

Eastern District of Louisiana

Lemelle was aFederal Magistrate Judge for theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana.^[2]

On the recommendation of SenatorsMary Landrieu and John Breaux, Lemelle was nominated to theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana by PresidentBill Clinton on February 12, 1997, to a seat vacated byVeronica Wicker, as Wicker assumed senior status. Lemelle was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on April 3, 1998, and received commission onApril 7, 1998.^[3] Lemelle assumedsenior status on June 29, 2015.^[1]
