Hugh Lawson
Hugh Lawson is anArticle III federal judge for theUnited States District Court for the Middle District of Georgia. He joined the court in 1995 after being nominated by PresidentBill Clinton. Lawson served the court aschief judge from 2006-2008 and assumedsenior status on December 31, 2008. Lawson's service ended on March 29, 2024, upon his death.[1]
Early life and education
Judge Lawson graduated from Emory University with his bachelor's degree in 1963 and later graduated from the Emory University School of Law with hisJ.D. Degree in 1964.[1]
Professional career
Lawson was a private practice attorney licensed in the State ofGeorgia from 1965 to 1979 before becoming a superior court judge in the Oconee Judicial Circuit Superior Court of Georgia from 1979 to 1995.[1]
Judicial career
Middle District of Georgia
On the recommendation of U.S. Senator Sam Nunn, Lawson was nominated by PresidentBill Clinton onAugust 10, 1995 to a seat vacated byWilbur Owens, Jr. which assumedsenior status. Lawson was confirmed by the U.S. Senate onDecember 22, 1995 on a majority voice vote and received commission onDecember 26, 1995.[1]
Judge Lawson served as thechief judge of theMiddle District of Georgia from 2006 to 2008 before assumingsenior status onDecember 31, 2008. He was succeeded in this position byMarc Thomas Treadwell. Lawson's service ended on March 29, 2024, upon his death.[1]
