Biography
Houston Gaines lives in Athens, Georgia.[1] Gaines earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Georgia. His career experience includes working as a consultant.[2] Gaines has been affiliated with the Envision Athens Steering Committee, the Junior League of Athens Community Advisory Board, and the LEAD Athens Alumni Association Board of Directors.[1][2]

A special election for the position ofGeorgia House of RepresentativesDistrict 117 was called for November 7, 2017. The candidate filing deadline was September 15.[3] The candidates who successfully qualified were DemocratDeborah Gonzalez and RepublicanHouston Gaines. Gonzalez won the special election on November 7, flipping the seat from Republican to Democratic control.
The seat became vacant followingRegina Quick's (R) appointment as a superior court judge in August 2017.
