Horace Harmon Lurton (1844-1914) was an Associate Justice on theSupreme Court of the United States. He joined the court in 1909 after a nomination from PresidentWilliam H. Taft. He served on the Supreme Court until his death on July 12, 1914. Prior to joining the court, Lurton was a judge for theUnited States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit.[1]

Lurton was one of six justices nominated to the Supreme Court by President Taft. He served duringThe Fuller Court andThe White Court.[2]

Early life and education

Lurton received an undergraduate degree from Douglas University and a LL.B. from Cumberland University in 1867.[1]

Supreme Court

Lurton was nominated to the Supreme Court by PresidentWilliam Howard Taft on December 13, 1909, to a seat vacated by JusticeRufus Wheeler Peckham. He was confirmed by the Senate onDecember 20, 1909, and received commission that same day. Lurton served until his death onJuly 12, 1914.[1] He was succeeded to this post by JusticeJames Clark McReynolds.

Sixth Circuit

Lurton was nominated to theUnited States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit by PresidentGrover Cleveland on March 22, 1893. He was confirmed by the Senate onMarch 27, 1893, and received commission that same day. He served on this court untilDecember 20, 1909.[1]
