Harry Walker Wellford was afederal judge with theUnited States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit. Wellford joined the court after a nomination from PresidentRonald Reagan (R). He assumedsenior status on January 15, 1991. Wellford's service terminated on April 17, 2021, due to death.[1]

Prior to joining theSixth Circuit, Wellford was a judge on theUnited States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee.[1]

Early life and education

A native ofMemphis, Tennessee, Wellford earned his bachelor's degree from Washington and Lee University in 1947 and hisLL.B. from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1950.[1]

Military service

Wellford was an ensign in the United States Navy from 1944 to 1946.[1]

Wellford was nominated to theUnited States Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit by PresidentRonald Reagan on July 27, 1982, to a seat vacated by JudgeBailey Brown. Hearings on Wellford's nomination were held before theUnited States Senate Committee on the Judiciary on August 4, 1982, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Sen. Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on August 19, 1982. Wellford's nomination was confirmed on the unanimous consent of theU.S. Senate on August 20, 1982, and he received his commission the same day. Wellford assumedsenior status on January 15, 1991. He officially ended his service on April 17, 2021, when he died.[1][2] Wellford was succeeded in this position by JudgeEugene Siler.

Western District of Tennessee

Wellford was nominated to theUnited States District Court for the Western District of Tennessee by PresidentRichard Nixon (R) on November 24, 1970, to a new seat created by 84 Stat. 294. He was confirmed by theUnited States Senate on December 11, 1970, and he received his commission the next day. He resigned from the district court on September 10, 1982, upon his elevation to theSixth Circuit Court of Appeals.[1] Wellford was succeeded in this position by JudgeJulia Gibbons.
