Quist was nominated to theUnited States District Court for the Western District of Michigan by PresidentGeorge H.W. Bush on March 20, 1992, to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089. TheAmerican Bar Association rated QuistUnanimously Well Qualified for the nomination. Hearings on Quist's nomination were held before theSenate Judiciary Committee on June 18, 1992, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Sen.Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on June 25, 1992. Quist was confirmed by the unanimous consent of theU.S. Senate on June 26, 1992, and he received his commission on June 30, 1992. Quist elected to takesenior status beginning on January 1, 2006. He was succeeded in this position by JudgeRobert Jonker.[1][2][3]

Noteworthy cases

Judgment recognized in Swiss hockey injury case (2014)

In June 2014, Judge Quist upheld a $1.6 million judgment against former NHL player Kevin Miller resulting from injuries sustained by another player that were attributed to Miller during a game in Switzerland. The injuries ended the other player's career. A Swiss court issued a judgment in the injured player's insurance company's favor. Judge Quist upheld and enforced the judgment, with interest and costs, under the Uniform Foreign-Country Judgments Recognition Act.
