George Kazen
George P. Kazen was anArticle III federal judge for theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of Texas. He joined the court in 1979 after being nominated by PresidentJimmy Carter. Kazen assumed senior status in 2009. He passed away on April 28, 2021.[1]
Early life and education
Born in Laredo, Texas, Kazen graduated from the University of Texas atAustin with his bachelor's in Business Administration degree in 1960 and later from the University of Texas School of Law with hisJuris Doctor degree in 1961.[2]
Professional career
Kazen was a briefing attorney for theTexas Supreme Court from 1961 to 1962. From 1962 to 1965, Kazen served as an Air Force Captain in the JAG (Judge Advocate General) Corps. Kazen was a private practice attorney in Texas until 1979. Kazen also served as an Adjunct Professor of Law at St. Mary's University Law School.[2]
Judicial career
Southern District of Texas
On the recommendation of Texas U.S. Senator Lloyd Bentsen, Kazen was nominated to theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of Texas by PresidentJimmy Carter on March 7, 1979 to a new judgeship created by 92 Stat. 1629, which was approved by Congress. Kazen was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 10, 1979 and received commission onMay 11, 1979. Kazen served as Chief Judge from 1996 to 2003. Kazen assumed senior status onMay 31, 2009.[2]
