George Daniels is afederal judge onsenior status with theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of New York. He joined the court in 2000 after being nominated by PresidentBill Clinton. In 1995, Daniels was appointed by Governor George Petaki as Justice of theSupreme Court of the State of New York from 1995 to 2000.[1] Daniels assumedsenior status on May 1, 2021.[2]

Education

Born in Allendale, South Carolina, Daniels graduated from Yale University with his bachelor's degree in 1975 and later from Cal-Berkeley Law with hisJuris Doctor degree in 1978.[1]

Professional career

Daniels began his legal career as a trial attorney for the Legal Aid Society of New York assisting low-income clients from 1978 to 1980. Daniels served as a law clerk for formerChief JusticeRose Bird in theCalifornia Supreme Court from 1980 to 1981 before entering private practice from 1981 to 1983. In 1983, Daniels joined theU.S. Attorney's Office as assistant U.S. attorney for theEastern District of New York from 1983 to 1989. From 1988 to 1991, Daniels also served as an adjunct professor of law at the Brooklyn Law.[1]

From 1989 to 1990 and again from 1993 to 1995, Daniels was a Judge in the Criminal Court of the City of New York with a brief term as Counsel to former New York City Mayor David Dinkins. In 1995, Daniels was appointed by Governor George Petaki as Justice of theSupreme Court of the State of New York from 1995 to 2000.[1]

Judicial career

Southern District of New York

On the recommendation of U.S. Senators Daniel Patrick Moynihan and Chuck Schumer, Daniels was nominated to theUnited States District Court for the Southern District of New York byBill Clinton onAugust 5, 1999 to a seat vacated byRobert Patterson. Daniels was confirmed by the Senate onFebruary 24, 2000 on a unopposed 97-0-3 vote and received commission onMarch 9, 2000.[3]

Daniels assumedsenior status on May 1, 2021.[2]
