Frederick Van Sickle
Frederick L. Van Sickle was anArticle III federal judge for theUnited States District Court for the Eastern District of Washington. He joined the court in 1991 after being nominated by PresidentGeorge H.W. Bush (R). He served onsenior status from May 1, 2008, until he died on September 2, 2021.
Early life and education
A native ofWisconsin, Van Sickle graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with his bachelor's degree in 1965 and later graduated from the University of Washington School of Law with hisjuris doctorate degree in 1968. Van Sickle also served in the U.S. Army as a First Lieutenant in the JAG Corps from 1968 to 1970.[1]
Professional career
Van Sickle began his legal career as a prosecuting attorney inDouglas County from 1971 to 1975 and also served as a private practice licensed in the State ofWashington from 1970 to 1975. Van Sickle also served as aSuperior Court Judge, inGrant and Douglas counties from 1975 to 1979 and inChelan and Douglas counties from 1979 to 1992.[1]
Judicial career
Eastern District of Washington
Van Sickle was nominated by PresidentGeorge Bush (R) on March 21, 1991, to a new seat created by 104 Stat. 5089, which was approved by Congress. Van Sickle was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on May 9, 1991, on a Senate vote and received commission onMay 14, 1991. Van Sickle served as thechief judge of the court from 2000 to 2005 and assumedsenior status onMay 1, 2008. His service ended on September 2, 2021, when he died.[1][2] Van Sickle was succeeded in this position byRosanna Peterson.
