Frederic N. Smalkin was afederal judge on theUnited States District Court for the District of Maryland. Smalkin joined the court on September 26, 1986, after a nomination by PresidentRonald Reagan (R). He served aschief judge from 2001 to 2003. He assumedsenior status on January 8, 2003. Smalkin retired from the court on September 1, 2011.[1]

Smalkin was succeeded in this position byRichard Bennett.

Education

Smalkin received his undergraduate degree from Johns Hopkins University in 1968 and hisJ.D. from the University of Maryland School of Law in 1971.[1]

Smalkin was nominated by PresidentRonald Reagan on August 15, 1986, to a seat vacated byJames Rogers Miller, Jr. He was confirmed by theUnited States Senate on September 25, 1986, and received commission thenext day. He served aschief judge from 2001 until he assumedsenior status onJanuary 8, 2003.[1] Smalkin was succeeded in this position byRichard Bennett.
