Almonte ran for the office ofstate treasurer in the2014 elections. In contrast to his previous campaigns, Almonte ran as anindependent candidate.[5] The general election took place on November 4, 2014.

In May 2012, Almonte filed paperwork with the Board of Elections to run as a Democratic candidate for Governor in 2014. Although the election was two years away at the time of his filing, Almonte indicated a strong commitment to a 2014 bid, saying, "A lot of people do exploratory committees – I’m not that way. This is what I’m doing."[8][4]

However, in late April 2013, Almonte said he might run forRhode Island General Treasurer instead. "All I can tell you at this point is that I definitely have the skill set for governor and treasurer," he said.[9]

In mid-May, Almonte abandoned his bid for governor, telling supporters, "I realize at this point in my life, I can create greater good for the State of Rhode Island by applying my education, experience and ethical foundation to the office of General Treasurer."[10]
