Endangered species policy involves the identification ofendangered and threatened animals and plants nationally and in each state, and the type of protection they receive from theU.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and state government agencies. As of July 2015, there were 2,457 endangered and threatened species listed in the 50 states under the federalEndangered Species Act (this does not include species in U.S. territories). This included 1,429 animal species and 1,028 plant species.
