Candidate Connection

Emmanuel Krasner completedBallotpedia's Candidate Connection survey. The survey questions appear in bold and are followed by Krasner's responses.

What would be your top three priorities, if elected?

My top three priorities would be: a) property tax relief. The major tax burden in New Hampshire is carried by property taxpayers, residential and commercial. This puts excessive burden on homeowners and small businesses. The tax is regressive. It is not related to the ability to pay. It creates an unfair, uneven tax burden from municipality to municipality. It pits one portion of the community against another. In particular the citizens on fixed incomes are asked to pay for the rising cost of education and other municipal services at a time when they can least afford to do so. B) the opioid epidemic: The state must take much stronger actions, including the allocation of financial resources, to help local communities and voluntary groups combat the problem of drug addiction. This is part of the need for a better healthcare system. C) Education: education is critical to both informed and capable citizenry and is a fundamental basis for economic growth and prosperity

What areas of public policy are you personally passionate about?

I am passionate about the three topics mentioned above. In addition I am passionate about economic justice and social justice. Every member of our society should have this close to an equal opportunity to succeed and fulfill themselves and their dreams, as we can provide. Economic status of birth: race, gender, religion, nationality, or sexual identity they should not a on a disadvantage.

Who do you look up to? Whose example would you like to follow, and why?

I admire Eleanor Roosevelt, Dennis Kucinich, Nelson Mandela, Hugo Black, Bernie Sanders, Martin Luther King Jr., they were all willing to stand up, and speak out for justice.

Is there a book, essay, film, or something else you would recommend to someone who wants to understand your political philosophy?

books: Cry the Beloved Country, by Alan Paton; Rabble in Arms, by Kenneth Roberts; Films: The Princess Bride, 12 Angry Men Essays: Shooting an Elephant, George Orwell, The Washed Window Booker T Washington

What characteristics or principles are most important for an elected official?

honesty, courage, willingness to listen, and empathy

What qualities do you possess that you believe would make you a successful officeholder?

3 of the 4 above

What do you believe are the core responsibilities for someone elected to this office?

keeping the promises made during the campaign, resisting pressure from financial and other outside interests, keep your constituents in mind at all times

What legacy would you like to leave?

A fair tax and economic system

What is the first historical event that happened in your lifetime that you remember? How old were you at the time?

watching the Army McCarthy hearings on television. I was about five

What was your very first job? How long did you have it?

As a maintenance man at Brookshire knitting mill. It lasted three months of summer vacation from college

What happened on your most awkward date?

There are too many very awkward moments to relate. It is hard to choose which is the most awkward. On my first date with my wife, I had forgotten my wallet and had to walk across the theater and borrow $20 from my father .

What is your favorite holiday? Why?

do not have a favorite holiday.

What is your favorite book? Why?

The Lord of the Rings, it is a great sweeping epic and the good guys win.

If you could be any fictional character, who would you want to be?

Aaragorn son of Arathorn

What is your favorite thing in your home or apartment? Why?

my favorite inanimate object in my home is my pool table

What was the last song that got stuck in your head?

I have a song stuck in my head about once an hour. The last one was "Mr. Postman".

What is something that has been a struggle in your life?

Two things: being more assertive when it is necessary; and being more attentive to what people are saying to me.
