An individual must be at least 18 years of age, a United States citizen, and a resident of the jurisdiction in which he or she is registering to be eligible to vote in that jurisdiction. Some states require voters to have lived in their state or voting jurisdiction for a set period of time before Election Day. Individuals who are under the age of 18 may be able topre-register.[1]

Under federal law, every state must allow residents to register to vote for federal elections up to at least 30 days before the election, though some states have registration deadlines that are closer to Election Day. Additional requirements and restrictions on voter registration, such asvoting eligibility of people convicted of a felony, vary by state.[1]
