Charge of operating a motor vehicle under the influence (2020)

On April 16, 2020, Lewis was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle under the influence. According to a Laurel County sheriff's report, Lewis was found in his vehicle along a split rail fence in a ditch. The report also alleged that Lewis appeared unsteady, slurred his speech, and smelled of alcohol.[2]

During his arraignment, Lewis pleaded not guilty. According to theTimes Tribune, Lewis' attorneys released a statement via Lewis' Facebook:

"On April 16, 2020, at or before midnight, Mr. Lewis was returning to London after working the entire day in Frankfort. As he proceeded home, his vehicle struck a ditch and became immobile. He was not injured. Mr. Lewis was later charged by the Laurel County Sheriff’s Department with operating his vehicle under the influence...everyone following this matter keep an open mind and not reach any conclusions while the matter proceeds through the legal system."[2]

Lewis' trial was originally scheduled for September 23, 2020. After being postponed three times, it was scheduled for May 19, 2021.[2][3]

During the trial, Lewis' attorney argued that the arresting officers' testimony was inconsistent with the information they included in the arrest citation. At the conclusion of the trial, a jury found Lewis not guilty of operating a motor vehicle under the influence.[4]

Lewis posted a statement to Facebook after the trial's conclusion: "After waiting over a year to go to trial due to circumstances beyond my control, today I was found innocent by a jury of my peers. I appreciate the men and women of the jury for giving careful consideration to the facts of this case, as well as to my family and friends for standing by me during this extremely difficult time. Today's verdict is a reminder that we still live in the greatest nation on earth, and that truth can and will prevail. I look forward to putting this behind me and continuing my work on behalf of the people of Clay, Leslie, and Laurel counties."[4]

Scorecards

Ascorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
